Polytechnic, and NZIHT (New Zealand Institute of Highway Technology) in the following areas:

Roughness data collection

In 2004 Chris Shaw (through SCS) was engaged by ARRB Road Info Ltd as Marketing Manager. During this year Chris gained in-depth knowledge of both the operational and technical aspects of the High Speed Data collection industry. Chris has also received training on operation of multi laser profiling systems, texture data collection, road geometry collection systems and continuous imaging systems. Recently Chris has undertaken extensive training in the use of the ARRB two laser profiler purchased by SCS.

SCS is fortunate to have secured the full time employment of Bruce Macfarlane, one of New
Zealand’s most experienced and highly regarded roughness survey operators. With over 16 years experience surveying roads in nearly every city, town and rural network throughout the country.  We are confident that we can provide an extremely high level of service in the most efficient and cost effective way possible. Few people, if any, could claim more experience and better professional reputation than Bruce in this type of work.

RAMM Road Condition Rating

Chris Shaw has been an accredited trainer of RAMM raters since 1996 and has been the sole
national trainer of RAMM raters since 1999. In this capacity Chris has facilitated the development and updating of the RAMM Road Condition Rating Manual on behalf of Land Transport New Zealand.

  • Chris also has a thorough understanding of the requirements of the RAMM rating and Treatment Sele  This knowledge is essential in the process of extracting road rating section data from client’s databases, management of the data collected and loading of the completed survey data back into RAMM. He also has a thorough understanding of the LTNZ requirements for RAMM data in terms of qualifying for central government subsidies of road maintenance and capital works. This funding could be placed at risk if rating data is not collected accurately and completely.

Bruce is also a certified RAMM Rater who has 14 years experience in surveying local roads in the majority of local authority regions throughout New Zealand. This experience is vital to SCS in developing this new aspect of the business.

From time to time SCS will employ sub-contractors for rating work. These sub-contractors will be experienced and reliable qualified raters and will be supervised and audited by SCS staff.
SCS believes that with the background described above we are able to provide a service of
uncompromised quality and efficiency with full compliance with the national standards defined
by LTNZ.
